Direct Access

No Prescription No Problem

You have a right to make your own healthcare choices!

In 2015, Virginia law was updated to give you, the consumer, the right to obtain Physical Therapy services directly, without requiring a prescription from a physician for a 30-day period.  This update allows patients greater access to healthcare services in a more timely and cost-effective manner. This greatly empowers people with control over their own care and keep their costs down.

Often, this 30-day treatment period is sufficient to help you through the acute stage of a problem, or allow you to begin treatment while awaiting an appointment with your physician, if necessary.

What do I have to do to be seen? Simply call us directly and make your Physical Therapy appointment at your convenience. When you arrive, you will be given a Direct Access Patient Attestation Form to complete on which you will indicate whether you have seen a physician for this problem. If so, your physical therapist will send a written report of your condition to that physician with your permission.

Are there limits or restrictions to seeing my physical therapist? You can see a physical therapist of your choice for up to 30 days without a prescription.  A prescription from a physician will be required to continue treatment after 30 days.

Is it safe to see a Physical Therapist before seeing my physician?  Our Doctors of Physical Therapy can proficiently evaluate and manage musculoskeletal conditions, movement disorders, functional limitations and disabilities related to pain and movement functionality.  Doctors of Physical Therapy are educated in identifying patient conditions which are outside of the scope of Physical Therapy practice and will refer you to the appropriate health care provider immediately, if indicated.

Will my insurance cover my Physical Therapy visits if I’m seen without a prescription from my physician?  In most cases, your insurance company will cover therapy services as usual, but feel free to call The Virginia Center for Spine & Sports Therapy or check with your insurance company directly.

Summary of Advantages:

  1. Allows for immediate attention and treatment for your issue
  2. Allows you to choose your therapy provider
  3. Reduces healthcare costs for consumers and insurers

Direct Access is the ability of patients to directly seek Physical Therapy care without needing a prescription from a physician for a duration of up to 30 days. This can save patients time and money and give them the option of where to begin their journey towards healing. Our physical therapists have all earned doctoral degrees, which includes training in differential diagnoses and identification of “red flag” signs. Most insurance carriers do not require a physician prescription for reimbursement. In fact, Direct Access potentially saves money to both patients and insurers. Contact us and we gladly answer any questions you may have, as well as check your insurance carrier’s requirements and your financial responsibility.
